Does she really like you, or is she just trying to be polite and get a bigger tip?
It’s not always easy to tell if a waitress likes you, but there are a few key signs that you can be on the lookout for.
I should know, after all, my best friend was a waitress during most of her years at college.
How Do You Know If A Waitress Is Interested?
Aside from the waitress verbally expressing interest in you, you want to look for her acting differently around you, flirting exclusively with you, as well as eye contact and body language.
Face it, most waitresses are overall going to be acting much nicer, it’s a part of their job and they know that strongly correlates with getting better tips and making more money.
You can’t blame them, especially for the fact that they make the most amount of money from their tips. With that being said, let’s talk more about the big signs that you’ll want to look for.
1) The Waitress Acts Differently
A big giveaway that the waitress likes you is the fact that she acts totally different when servicing and speaking with you.
This is going to require you to see how she engages with other customers in the restaurant. Here are a few examples of her acting differently around you:
- She initiates conversation with you when she doesn’t with others.
- Not normally being too chatty with others but being chatty with you.
- She’s normally very chatty but gets tongue-tied with you (she even blushes).
- She spends much more time at your table but quickly services everyone else.
Plus, you might see that she has completely different body language around you compared to others. It’s almost as if she does a complete 180 when speaking with you.
There are plenty of subtle ways that the waitress can act differently around you, and the more often that you see her do that, the higher the chances are that she’s interested in you.
2) The Waitress Finds Ways To Touch You
Does the waitress find many ways or reasons to lightly make contact with you? Then there’s a good chance that she really likes you.
Here are a few examples of how she can break the touch barrier with you:
- Give you a high five and congratulate you.
- Laughing at your jokes and touching your arm.
- She will tap your shoulder when it’s time for you to order.
- She will groom you: something on your shirt, sleeve rolled, tie crooked, etc.
- She also focuses on safe areas to touch such as your hands, arms, upper back, etc.
Remember, that she does all of this professionally and in a polite manner.
She is at work, so she’s not always able to be upfront and forward with the fact that she is interested in you… except for one way, which I will get to last.
Also, there is one more thing to keep in mind when it comes to a waitress touching you.
Do you think that a waitress would constantly make contact with you if she didn’t like you? Absolutely not. In fact, she would do the complete opposite by limiting her encounters with you.
So the more that the waitress touches you, the more interest that she has in you.
3) The Waitress Holds Eye Contact With You
Your waitress might blur the lines when it comes to looking at you, and holding eye contact long enough so that you could almost read her mind.
Waitresses don’t always have a lot of time for locking eyes with customers, this is simply for the fact that they have a lot of things to do, such as:
- Take and write down your order.
- Get your food and bring it over to you.
- Come back and make sure that everything is good.
- Ask if you need anything else or if you need any refills.
- And keep in mind that she has to do this with many other tables.
So if when she comes to your table, and you find that she’s consistently locking eyes with you? Consider this a very big sign of interest.
Especially if you are sitting with a group of friends, you want to see who she is locking eyes with the most. This is one of the best ways for her to convey interest without speaking a word.
Actually, I take that back. Here is the fourth and final (most obvious) sign that she is interested in you. Should you happen to experience this, you’ll have 100% certainty that she likes you.
4) The Waitress Gives You Her Phone Number
If the waitress gives you her number, then it becomes painfully obvious that she not only likes you but is seriously interested in seeing and hearing from you.
I bring this up because it is something that my best friend did once when she was working at Ruby Tuesday. I remember her telling the story too.
She said that a very cute man was having lunch with his father, and he was tall too (she had a weakness for tall and cute men).

He had come in a few times before, and it seemed like he didn’t give her a lot of attention, despite her:
- Frequently waiting on him.
- Breaking the touch barrier with him.
- As well as holding eye contact and smiling whenever he would speak.
I remember her saying that she even told the hostess that if he ever came in again, to sit him in the section where she was waitressing. She wanted to get closer to the guy.
In other words, she did everything that I have mentioned in this article. Ultimately, she ended up asking her boss if she could give him her number, and the boss gave her the green light.
So when she was giving them their receipt back, she was very clever about how she gave him her number. She stated:
Since you come here so often, I wanted to give you a 15% discount on your next visit.
After she told him that, she slid the guy (and not the father) the receipt holder and then walked off. By the time she was back near the kitchen, he opened it up to realize that it said:
Call me, here is my number 🙂
Out of all of the years that she had worked as a waitress, this was the only time that she ever had done that. I remember her gushing over the guy, so there was no wonder why she did that.
Either way, that’s the absolute biggest way to know that a waitress likes you. However, there are going to be a few ways that you can use to attract the waitress herself. Let’s talk about that now.
How Do You Attract A Waitress?
Attracting a waitress comes down to politely flirting with her, and giving her more attention than she might normally be used to.
The biggest thing here is to keep in mind that it can get very awkward if you start coming on too strong, and the same goes when the waitress initiates any type of flirting.
If you want to attract a waitress, you can focus on a lot of the techniques that she might have used on you:
- Sit at the end of the table to be closer to her.
- Try and casually break the touch barrier with her.
- Hold eye contact with her whenever you are speaking, and smile frequently.
- Last but not least, there is always the option for you to give her your number.
I was reading a forum, and someone came up with a great idea when it comes to giving her your number. The person (who remained anonymous) said to leave a note that says:
Either you’re super flirty for a nice tip or my number. Here’s both.
The ball will then be in her court. If you don’t hear back from her, then she might not be interested or already might be dating someone.
If you do hear back from the waitress, then it’s only good news for you!
Is It OK To Ask A Waitress Out? Final Words
It is okay to ask a waitress out, just please keep in mind that you should only do so if you sense that she is first interested in you.
Aside from that, it’s hard for a waitress to show too much interest in the first place, given the fact that she’s working and has to be as professional as possible.
One of the easiest ways to ask her out would be to write your number on the receipt. That way, she won’t have to deal with any awkward conversations depending on her answer.
Either way, be polite, be professional about it, and if you sense that there’s some great chemistry between the both of you? Then it’s certainly okay to ask a waitress out.
